Featured in our calendar “2026 Carolina Gems: All Around North Carolina” for October
North Carolina’s coast is known for its beaches, lighthouses, and maritime history, but just beneath the surface, there’s another world waiting to be explored. The North Carolina Aquariums offer visitors a chance to get up close with sea turtles, sharks, otters, and countless other creatures that call the state’s rivers and oceans home.
Each of the state’s aquariums has a distinct personality that makes it stand out from each other: on Roanoke Island, the “Graveyard of the Atlantic” exhibit immerses guests in a massive ocean tank filled with sand tiger sharks and schooling fish. Nearby, the Sea Turtle Assistance and Rehabilitation Center provides care for injured turtles while educating visitors about conservation. From touch pools to behind-the-scenes tours, this aquarium blends family fun with hands-on learning. Further south in Pine Knoll Shores, visitors can follow the journey of water from mountain streams to the sea. River otters, stingrays, jellyfish, and even a replica of a sunken U-boat make this location especially dynamic. Nestled beside Roosevelt Maritime Forest, the setting adds to the sense of discovery. It’s also the largest saltwater aquarium in the state.
Down the coast in Fort Fisher, the focus shifts to the Cape Fear River and its path to the Atlantic. Guests can meet Luna, a rare albino alligator, and explore exhibits that highlight prehistoric marine life, including ancient sharks. This location is also home to a colorful lorikeet aviary, giving families a chance to connect with wildlife both in and out of the water. Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head offers a slightly different twist. Technically part of the aquarium system, the pier blends science, fishing, and ocean education. Visitors can take a class, join a beach walk, or simply enjoy the view from one of the longest piers on the East Coast.
Whether you’re on a family beach trip or just looking for something new to explore, North Carolina’s aquariums offer a mix of adventure, education, and natural beauty. Fall is a great time to visit, with fewer crowds and cooler temperatures, the experience becomes even more relaxed and personal.
