Medicare Advantage Plans

Sometimes referred to as Medicare Part C or “MA Plans”, Medicare Advantage Plans are a type of Medicare health plan offered by a private company that contracts with Medicare to provide all your Part A and Part benefits. Most MA Plans offer prescription drug coverage, or Medicare Part D, as well as Parts A and B – Hospital Indemnity and Medical Insurance, respectively.

Medicare Supplement Plans

Original Medicare, at times, has “gaps” in its coverage. This is where a Medicare Supplement Plan comes into play, or sometimes called a “Medigap” or “Med Supp” policy. These additional coverage plans help fill in the gaps of Original Medicare by helping pay some remaining healthcare costs that may not covered, like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. These plans do not change year to year.

Any caregiver who accepts Medicare will also take a Supplement Plan, because they would only need to bill Medicare and not you. Medicare pays their part, which is generally 80% of Medicare-covered benefits, and bills the remaining amount to the private company who sold your Supplement policy. It’s important to note that Medigap Plans do NOT include Prescription Drug Coverage (Medicare Part D, or PDP).

Prescription Drug Plans

Medicare Part D is a voluntary outpatient prescription drug benefit for those with Medicare, provided through private plans. Medicare beneficiaries may choose to enroll in either a stand-alone Prescription Drug Plan (PDP) to also supplement traditional Medicare or a Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug Plan (MAPD) which covers all Medicare benefits including drugs.

Not all Part D Plans are created equal – they may vary greatly in costs, copays, and specific drug coverage. They are required to be at least as good as the Medicare model, but it’s important you check which one works best for you each year, as they do change every year.

If you’re looking for a Medicare insurance agent in the Winston-Salem or greater Triad areas of North Carolina, we’ll happily answer any questions you have. Our purpose is to be your advocates in Medicare and with the health insurance companies. And as plans can vary from county to county, we strongly recommend reaching out to a senior insurance expert!

I grew up in Oshkosh, Wisconsin and have lived in the state my whole life, including four years attending the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Relocating to the Winston-Salem/Clemmons area is an exciting step, and I’m looking forward to getting to know the community and everything that comes with it. I’m big on the outdoors, especially fishing whenever I get the chance. I’m also a huge sports fan and love keeping up with games year-round.
