Four Kinds of Group Health Insurance

PPO Health Plans
or Preferred Provider Organization Plans, are the most common. Medical care from the doctors or hospitals on the insurance company’s list of preferred providers is required in order for claims to be paid at the highest level, if employees are covered under a PPO.
HMO Health Plans
or Health maintenance Organization Plans, offer a variety of healthcare services through a network of providers which are exclusive to or partnered with the HMO. Employees in an HMO plan will usually need to select a primary care physician (PCP) to provide most of their healthcare and refer them on to HMO specialists as needed.
HSA-Qualified Health Plans
are typically a PPO plan designed specifically for use with a Health Savings Account (HSA). HSAs are a special savings bank account specifically used for future medical expenses. These savings are pre-tax.
Indemnity Health Plans
allow members to direct their own healthcare and generally visit a doctor or hospital of their choice. A portion of the total costs will be covered by the insurance company, and employees may be required to pay for some services upfront and then apply for reimbursement from the insurance company.

Does Your Small Business Qualify for a Health Tax Credit?

If you are a small business owner with 25 full-time employees or less, and pay an average salary less than or equal to $50,000 a year, you may be eligible for a tax credit. (Certain restrictions may apply.) The federal tax credit will reimburse qualifying small businesses for up to 50% of the premiums they pay towards employee medical, vision and dental insurance.

Small businesses with fewer than 10 full-time employees that pay average annual wages of $25,000 or less may qualify for the full credit.
